Courts Rule Against Banks, Swipe Fee Reform Moves Forward

A federal court upheld a new Illinois law preventing credit card companies and banks from charging swipe fees on sales taxes and tips. The ban will now go into effect in July. Our Restaurant Law Center submitted legal filings in support of the law, and we now have a clear blueprint for other states to follow. For operators nationwide, this win opens the door for broader reform. We’re already coordinating with state partners to replicate this policy across more than 25 states, and this decision strengthens our momentum.
